| Truly Unique Movie | MuleD | on 08/08/2010 |
| Cube was a massive rip off of half a dozen Twilight Zone and Outer Limits shorts. That's not a judgment of quality, just of inspiration. Seven Samurai pioneered certain storytelling elements, but was clearly derived from American westerns. Of all the suggestions I've seen here, the only one that didn't owe its entire existence to the cinematic accomplishments of others was probably Melies. If you want some really unique ideas, you'd have to go back pretty far in the history of film. The Great Train Robbery was the first movie with the idea to tell an extended narrative, even just for a few minutes, and to break the fourth wall visually. Intolerance had the original idea to tell parallel narratives, connected only via thematic material, across different timelines. The Man With The Movie Camera. Battleship Potemkin. Citizen Kane had some original ideas, but not nearly enough to qualify as a whole. Vampyr would probably have blown your minds 80 years ago. Kenneth Anger was about as unique as he could get in the 1960's. See Scorpio Rising if you haven't already. Get ready to avert your eyes when the shit goes down. Of course the problem with watching a lot of these older movies is that their influence on everything - sometimes quite literally - is so pervasive that it's almost impossible to view them as the groundbreakers they were upon their release. What was unique has become familiar, and now we sometimes view the familiar as unique because it puts little twists on something. But if MuleD really just meant "Not based on material previously produced," this gets a lot bit easier. Bubba Ho-Tep is fairly original. Unleashed made the most of a very unexpected concept. Wall-E was pretty daring. The Human Centipede sure seemed to come out of nowhere. But again, that doesn't mean they're "original," just distinctive and not based on a book, comic book, movie or TV series or what have you. |

| Thanks, guys! I'm 28 now, meaning that I've officially outlived Kurt Cobain, even though I've accomplished about 5,000% less. That's a fair trade, so far... | ||
